VISIT THE YOUTUBE PLAYLIST FOR SOME DRUM FUN. For over 30 years, Richie has been playing, studying and teaching both drum set and percussion with a specific focus on Latin, Brazilian and African rhythms. Some of his early influences are the music he was surrounded by as a child such as Santana, El Chicano, Malo, Osibisa, Mongo Santamaria, Baba Olatunji, Fela Ktui and many other Latin, Funk, Soul, World Beat and Jam Rock artists.
Originally from South Carolina and spending years in Savannah, GA he knew moving to NYC would be the place to blossom. Early in his career he played drum set and percussion in rock, funk, jam and soul bands on the NYC club circuit before devoting more time to studying ethnic music with focus on djembe, congas, timbales, bongos and hand percussion, as well as drum circle community drumming.
Sorry, no fancy music degrees here. Living in the NYC area made it possible for him to learn from some of the greats as well as see them perform up close on street corners, parks, workshops and clubs. Never losing his connection with drum and dance circles, he has always been a part of that community through his weekly classes, private lessons, workshops and outdoor drum circles.
Currently he records and plays and records with local New York City area artists, spends time writing and performing World Music with his band "World Beat Groove" and still hosts periodic drum circles in the New York area.
